CLINTON'S MEA MINIMA CULPA

Bill Clinton had one chance to tell the truth and get the American people behind him and blew it. He just couldn't face the American people and tell the truth and ask for forgiveness. He had to lie. He admitted that he had an "inappropriate physical relationship" with Monica Lewinsky, but stated that while testifying under oath last January, his answers "were legally accurate."

One of those answers was that he didn't have a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky. Well, which is it? If it was "inappropriate" and "physical" but was not "sexual," what was it? Did he beat her up? The bottom line is that he looked the American people in the eye and lied again.

While under oath, he said he could not remember ever being alone with Monica. Now he tells us that he remembers his inappropriate physical relationship with her in enough detail to assure us that it was not sex within the meaning of a highly detailed definition provided in the Arkansas Penal Code.

Monica has testified that twelve times over eighteen months, she and the president engaged in sexual activity in which she touched him intimately, and he touched her intimately and soiled her dress, and that the activity met the legal definition of sex as stated in the Arkansas law. That is a lot for Bill Clinton not to remember. Or maybe he does remember but lied under oath.

Clinton swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. He stated in his televised remarks, following a day of testimony before the grand jury, that he did not lie, but did not "volunteer" the whole truth. Nobody asked him to "volunteer" the whole truth. He was under a legal obligation to provide it. he said his incomplete answers and his silence were motivated by a desire to avoid personal embarrassment, and because the lawsuit was "politically inspired." Does that sound like a man taking personal responsibility, or an act of contrition, or a politician equivocating and seeking to justify his prior bad acts?

Clinton's counsel, David Kendall, and Bill Clinton himself, admitted that he did not answer all of the questions posed to him before the grand jury. They said Clinton did not because he wanted privacy. Desire for privacy is not a recognized privilege. Monica Lewinsky had already answered those same questions in detail. The details are important, because they include specific sexual requests by Clinton that are out of the ordinary and that Clinton justified by his twisted ideas about maintaining deniability that the sex that he and Monica Lewinsky participated in was sex. His requests are probative to the legal question of whether Clinton had the required mens rea or mental state of intent to have sex and then to lie about it. This repeated lying under oath and enticing others to lie are precisely what threatens his presidency. The investigation is not about sex. It's about perjury, subornation of perjury, and obstruction of justice.

After two minutes of saying he had inappropriate physical contact with Monica Lewinsky but not sex, and that he lied during his deposition but did not commit perjury, and that he was sorry and was taking personal responsibility, Clinton spent four minutes blaming Ken Starr for it all. In other words, "Okay, I smoked pot and I'm sorry, but I didn't inhale and Ken Starr made me do it."

NBC's Tom Brokaw told the national television audience that the president's address to the nation was a "frontal attack" on the Office of the Independent Counsel. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orin Hatch said he was deeply troubled by the president's attacks on Ken Starr. White House sources say the president's political advisers told him not to attack Ken Starr, and that the attacks against Starr were not in the original draft of the speech written Sunday night (August 16), but that Hillary Clinton, who hates Ken Starr, insisted that her husband include the attacks.

Now that Clinton has demonstrated to the world by his actions that he is a liar, and has admitted with his words that he is a liar, and, of equal gravity, that he enlisted none other than Secretary of State Madeline Albright to go out to the world and lie on his behalf, Bill Clinton should step down or be removed from office. It is no coincidence that Saddam Hussein has chosen now to halt the United Nations arms inspections, an IRA splinter group has started bombing to halt the Clinton-negotiated peace process in Ireland, and Muslim terrorists are bombing U.S. embassies in Africa. There will be more to come.

Al Gore proved that he is I in 265,000,000 Americans when he issued his statement from his vacation site in Hawaii after the president addressed the nation. Vice President Ozone said, "I am proud of him."

High-level White House advisers made a point of telling members of the White House press corps that they "feel betrayed," are "devastated," and "angry that Clinton put them through this."

Hillary Clinton has been humiliated and is receiving thousands and thousands of message from American women who pity her. Bill Clinton is a worldwide joke---a dirty joke.

CNN reported that Clinton's favorable rating dropped 20 points overnight. Forty-eight percent of those polled by CNN think Clinton is a crook.

Clinton's goal was to end this matter. He failed.
