The 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign distributed a biography which identified one William Blythe, a traveling salesman. Our president, William Jefferson Clinton, was born August 19, 1946. According to David Maraniss, a Washington BLEEP columnist and sometimes biographer, Mr. Blythe was serving in the Army in Italy in December 1945, at the time Miss Cassidy conceived the future president. In fact, records indicate that Blythe did not return from Europe until March 1946.
William Blythe died in an automobile accident on an Arkansas highway in the summer of 1946, just weeks before baby Bill came into the world. According to R. Emmitt Tyrell, another Clinton biographer and a highly respected Washinton journalist for several decades, some in Arkansas report that the Cassidy family just visited the county morgue and found a corpse, Blythe, to whom a very young, very pregnant Virginia was fraudulently married.
What does all this mean? Nothing really, except that Clinton's complex relationship with the truth can be traced back to his early, early childhood.
